Board of Directors

The Sledge Institute is governed by its own Board of Directors, a group comprised of professionals from various sectors including leaders in early childhood through higher education, corporate & nonprofit organizations, law, philanthropy, and social services. The Board includes parents and local community members, members with deep ties to the Kerr Tar region, as well as members accomplished in transformative leadership in the broader national and global educational landscape. The Directors embody the core values of Sledge Institute and established the vision & mission that guides our work.

The Board of Directors is responsible for fiscal oversight, policy development, legal compliance, connecting our school to resources that support the mission and the six key elements of our vision, and strategic direction of the school. Partnering with our Founder & Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Chandra Sledge Mathias, the Board provides accountability and advisement to ensure fidelity to our mission and our model.

Advisory Board

The Sledge Institute Advisory Board plays a vital, supportive role in the school’s ecosystem, distinct from the Board of Directors. Members of this board do not sit on the Board of Directors and are not obligated to attend monthly meetings. Instead, their involvement focuses on providing strategic guidance, resources, and expertise to help the school achieve its goals.

Advisory board members bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the table, offering insights and recommendations on key issues that impact the school’s success. They are a valuable resource for brainstorming solutions, sharing best practices, and connecting the school with external resources or networks that may benefit its mission.

While they do not participate in the day-to-day operations or governance of the school, advisory board members commit to attending one annual retreat. This retreat serves as an opportunity for the board to review progress, discuss strategic priorities, and align on key objectives for the upcoming year.

In essence, the Sledge Institute Advisory Board functions as a supportive, strategic partner, helping the school navigate challenges and seize opportunities through their guidance and connections, without being involved in the regular governance of the school.

Board Committees

Sledge Institute Board Committees are small and instrumental working groups with a board member that serves as chair, as well as a second (and sometimes third) board member as a participant. Internal and external community members with expertise in the committee’s area of focus are at times recruited to serve on Board committees.
