Place-Based Education
Education is all around you. You don’t just learn ABOUT the world – you learn IN IT.
What is Place-Based Education?
At Sledge Institute, Place-Based Education is all about turning our local community and environment into our classroom. We use the places right around us—our neighborhoods, parks, and community spaces—as the starting point to make learning real and connected. Subjects like language arts, math, social studies, and science come to life when we can see how they apply to the world we live in.
This way of learning shows students that their community matters and that what they learn can make a difference. It’s hands-on, meaningful, and engaging, empowering students to be active participants in the world around them and to see themselves as changemakers.
Why Place-Based Education?
We know that learning is more powerful when students can connect what they’re studying to the real world around them. Place-Based Education lets students dive into the rich history and culture of their local communities and our region. This way of learning is all about building real connections with local community members, businesses, and organizations.
By working together on meaningful projects, students and the adults they team up with gain a deeper sense of belonging. They get to tackle real problems impacting the community right now through hands-on, project-based learning. Our students don’t just learn about their community—they play an active role in improving it, feeling the excitement and responsibility of making a difference.
We believe that students shouldn’t have to wait until they graduate to become involved citizens. At Sledge Institute, they start making an impact today!
